Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen for Wii

Just in time for the release of the movie, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is available for the Wii console.  While the game doesn’t follow the movie plot to a tee, it still features plenty of Transformers action to make those who are fans of the franchise set up and take notice.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Basics

As expected, players of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will embody a Transformer character from the movie and move around from level to level destroying the enemy.  Players can choose to play as their favorite Autobot or Decepticon – with familiar faces like Bumblebee, Ironhide, Starscream and others.  With each enemy that is defeated, players will receive renewed energy and restored health as well as the ability to perform special moves when attacking.  During these attacks, players will watch their characters do what Transformers do – transform.  In certain levels, players can also control their characters in vehicle form – going from humanoid to transformer.  Some of the options include sports cars, choppers, fighter jets, and diesel trucks.

Most of the game play is on a straight path, other than the “boss” fights where player’s powerful guns make the fights less challenging than most players enjoy.  While fighting the bosses, your health is being restored, so there is very little chance of losing – which makes for a less than ideal situation for those who are expecting to defeat the enemy or take a beating.  The repetitiveness of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen makes it look like a low-budget effort with little thought or time spent on programming.

Fortunately, later levels of the game require more complex skills to protect your character from enemy fire, many of them being executed with the use of the nunchuk controller and remote.  Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen can be played in two player mode – but don’t count on your teammate having any more fun than you are as they must play with the remote only as an attack drone (which even sounds boring).  Two players in arena mode is mildly more exciting – as both fight a boundless number of enemies in (again) repetitive combat action.

To Buy or Not to Buy Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen?

A saving grace for the Transformers stab at a video game is that players can take their battles online to play against one another in various game modes and with unique online only weapons.  This makes it at least resemble a Wii-worthy game.  Another plus is that the game includes an episode of the original Transformers cartoon series that can be unlocked.  Perhaps if the game’s developers would have added a few more bonuses to the deal the game would be more appealing.  As it is, however, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen leaves but one question in the player’s mind – just who is the revenge being taken on?  The answer: a disappointed gamer who was expecting much, much more from the game, especially when it is being played on (arguably) the best platform around (Wii).  Bottom line: for young kids who are really into the Transformer franchise, this game might be a good reinforcement of the movie that is lost on older, more demanding players.
